When it comes to international sports, there are some implications that need to be
evaluated. One focus is through ticket sales in regard to the world olympics. The major
issue when it comes to ticket sales for the olympic games is the fact that there are more
than 17,000 athletes competing from more than 50 countries across the globe (Fried,
2013). Distributing tickets is a task in itself when it comes to international competition
(Fried, 2013). The olympics in Beijing managed their ticket sales through online sales,
and also pushed them through the Bank of Beijing ( Chinese Law and Government, 2009).
Within the olympics in Beijing and how they managed ticketing, the committee broke
the ticketing into phases (Chinese Law and Government, 2009). With this four phase
system, the ticketing organization was able to manage the amount of tickets,
allottments, pricing, applications for tickets, and managing the channels in which the
tickets would be sold (Chinese Law and Government, 2009). When it comes down to the
payment for tickets, the committee does not take payments until the applications are
reviewed and the lottery is drawn (Chinese Law and Government, 2009). In my opinion of
ticket sales when it comes to international sports, I feel that there needs to be an
international committe that controls and manages the tickets of international
competition. The issue that comes about as unfair, in my opinion, is the fact that the
hosting country/city has the management of the tickets. I think this can be favored
toward that particular country and their business partners. When it comes to ticketing
costs, they need to be made fair in relation to each country represented. I feel that the
tickets need to be priced evenly based on the currency value of the hosting country.
Another point in regard to international competition is the point of broadcasting.
Broadcasting is where the money is made. For the international sporting events, the
organization hosting the sporting event is able to sell the broadcasting rights across the
world (Fried, 2013). Broadcasting rights can cost upwards of hundreds of millions of
dollars (Fried, 2013). I think the broadcasting is the most important part of international
competition. The cooperation and agreements to extend the sporting events across the
world is very important because it allows other countries to see the other sports and
teams outside of their country. I think that this helps to spread diversity and sport
recognition.
Overall, international sports have a great influence throughout the globe. There are
issues that go along with international sports, like ticketing, but there are also very
influential positives through broadcasting.
