Aim

The aim of this assignment is to help you integrate and understand the
basic concepts and ideas that underlie ecotourism. It will involve careful
reading about the issues contained in the course materials and other readings,
and providing an overview of the important literature. This essay will give you
the opportunity to think about these issues and then present an argument on the
topic.

Course objectives for this assignment are listed in the schedule of
assessment objectives under ‘Assessment scheme’.

Topic

Ecotourism is regarded as a sustainable form of tourism and is linked to
the green paradigm (Weaver 2008). Explain how ecotourism is different to other
forms of tourism and discuss whether the motivations of ecotourists differ
substantially from other tourists.

Assignment details

An essay should present a number of points that discuss the different
issues relating to the statement or questions in the topic. These points should
combine to build an overall argument to support your viewpoint. Your argument
should be based on the relevant literature and illustrated by examples, case
studies and research from your text, selected readings and other sources.

You should avoid using the study modules as a reference; instead you
should find the original or another source. Please refer to the Communication
skills handbook
(Summers & Smith, 3rd edn) for information about
preparing and writing an essay.

The following are minimum requirements for the assignment:

  • The assignment should be presented as an essay with an
introduction, main body and conclusion. You should give your essay a title
    and include a title page.

  • The essay must describe and discuss issues that relate the text and
    other readings to the topic.

  • A range of references in addition to your text and selected
readings, including at least two journal articles, should be
included. Note that the journal articles must be original articles that
you actually access, not simply cited from another source.

  • Assignments must be typed using 12 point font (preferably Times New
Roman) and 1.5 line spacing. The essay must not exceed the
    stipulated word length (+/– 10%).

  • All assignments are expected to have correct grammar, punctuation,
spelling, and referencing using the Harvard style of referencing. Please
refer to the Communication skills handbook (Summers & Smith,
    3rd edn) for detailed advice.

Please refer to the University website for extension guidelines if they
are required.
