Questions for Assignment #7
Assignment #7 is another D2L quiz. All of the calculations are possible by hand, but some
may be lengthy. You may want to carry out some of these procedures on a computer.
Excel, S-Plus, R, various other statistical software and web applets can do the calculations
for you. Chi-square tests are relatively straightforward, but the calculations can become
long and burdensome.
N.B. If you use a computer, DO NOT use Yates’ continuity correction, which is given as
an option in many statistical packages (we do not use it in the notes, and we have to all
get the same answer)
**Give your final answer to at least 3 decimal places where applicable. Carry many decimal
places throughout your calculations. A little round-off error early can easily compound and
result in an answer that is marked as incorrect**
The first 3 questions refer to the following information.
Suppose we have patients who were classified according to average number of alcoholic
drinks per week and whether or not they had congestive heart failure. It was found that:

Test the null hypothesis that alcohol consumption and heart failure are independent, using
the chi- square test of independence.
#1. What is the value of the test statistic? [Hint: It’s somewhere in between 9 and 11]
#2. What is the p-value of the appropriate test? Which one of the following best represents
the p-value?
A) p-value < .01
B) .01 < p-value < .025
C) .025 < p-value < .05
D) .05 < p-value < .10
E) p-value > .10
#3. Which one of the following is the best conclusion at α = .05?
A) There is significant evidence that alcohol consumption and heart failure are not independent.
