Kingway International
Who We Are: Beijing-based Kingway International is mainland China’s largest manufacturer and
exporter of apparel, footwear, furniture and toys. In operation for more than eighty years, the
company has enjoyed considerable growth over the last two decades thanks to an increased
amount of consumption in the West.
What’s the problem? U.S. New agencies have sympathized with animals, not people, during the
recent rabies outbreak- showing police attacks dogs that acted aggressively toward police. Due
to these reports a number of high-profile, U.S. – based groups have called for a boycott of goods
from Chinese exporters and have asked shoppers to abstain from patronizing stores where our
products are sold. As the largest supplier of these goods, Kingway’s sales could be affected
dramatically.
Our Position: As a private company not affiliated with the government’s actions, we believe we
are being unfairly targeted. We are a manufacturer and exporter with no control over
government policy. The American groups see China as a single entity, often realizing the
complexity of our country.
The United States’ decision to invade Iraq hasn’t affected our relationship. While the spheres of
politics and business inevitably intersect, we believe that a company should not be punished for
its country’s decisions. However, in order to save face we must not let the Americans know we
are displeased with China’s decision in any way. Doing so would disgrace our country, our
company, and ultimately- ourselves.
While the affluent West may vaccinate their dogs, that isn’t the case in our country. Dog meat is
occasionally eaten in parts of the country, and is seen as a way to restore vitality in men.
Following the Communist seize of power in 1949, ownership dogs was unlawful, although the
position has soften in the last two decades. For the Chinese, human life is always more
important that the life of animals.
What we Are Asking for: We want the American Retail Association to immediately respond to
the boycott, holding press conferences with the major media outlets to know that any embargo
(legislative or implied) will be detrimental to China/U.S. relations. Americans may quickly forget
about the incident in six months, our focus on maintaining our long-term relationship is vital.
With our impending financial situation we are able to assist the American Retail Association
with a good-faith pledge of $75,000 USD toward their efforts.
